FUNDAMENTAL ELEGY

...you have seen—for you brought them—the seas ablaze with the soul,
and thus we came to know each other: drinking in and burning, like an urgent hurricane
of thirst and fire, which snatched away vigor and tenderness, transforming them into destiny,
into death, into life, and necessary thunder;

…do you remember when life rose from the earth
with that feeling of the indescribable, true, and enduring?

Do you remember, do you still remember it...?

…and when love grew against our arms, calling to us,
touching us and offering us to be a star that once dwells in the heart
and dies, do you remember, can you, can you remember it now?

…I have seen you so many times fleeing from me and searching for me and telling me
that no, that the sea does not exist, nor lips, nor that world
of purest light…!

…what, what can stop the force of this unstoppable sea,
and why must I have your light within my own light, if we are both trembling,
and honey, and dream and brevity in this instant!
